Water is the fastest, most permanent way to kill a phone or camera. Here's how to shoot near it confidently — and what to do the moment gear gets wet.
Water damage is fast, quiet, and often terminal
Electronics and water fail together in ways that are quick and frequently unrecoverable. It isn't only immersion: humidity, spray, condensation, and a single splash into a charging port can corrode contacts and short circuits days after the event, long after the device seemed fine. Saltwater is far worse than fresh, because salt keeps conducting and corroding as it dries. And modern gear packs so much into sealed assemblies that a little intruding moisture can reach several critical components at once.
The reason this guide exists is that the best shots are often near water — a coastline, a river, a pool, a rain-soaked street — and the instinct to leave the phone or camera safely in the bag means missing them. You don't have to choose between the shot and the gear. With the right protection and habits, you can shoot confidently in and around water and bring everything home dry. The key is understanding what the ratings promise, choosing the right protection for the risk, and knowing the recovery steps before you need them.
Start from a healthy respect for how permanent water damage is. Unlike a scratch or a dead battery, a corroded logic board is usually the end of the device. That's what makes a few dollars of prevention such an easy trade.
What IP ratings actually mean
The IP (Ingress Protection) code is a two-digit rating, like IP68, defined by an international standard. The first digit rates protection against solids and dust on a scale to 6, where 6 means fully dust-tight. The second digit rates protection against water, and for the top submersion levels, 7 means protection during temporary immersion to one meter, and 8 means protection during continuous immersion beyond one meter under conditions the manufacturer specifies. When you see 'X' in a code like IPX8, it simply means the solids resistance wasn't rated — not that it's zero, just untested — while the water figure still applies.
For phone dry bags and pouches, IPX8 and IP68 are effectively equivalent on the thing that matters, water. IP68 adds a dust rating that's relevant to a phone's own build but not to a sealed pouch. So don't agonize over IPX8 versus IP68 on a pouch; both certify serious submersion resistance. What deserves your attention instead is that any rating is a laboratory result under controlled conditions — clean water, specified depth and time, a perfect seal — and real life is messier.
Two important caveats. First, IP water ratings are tested with fresh water; saltwater and chlorinated pool water are harsher, so rinse gear afterward. Second, a phone's own IP rating degrades over time as seals age and after any drop, which is why manufacturers won't cover water damage even on 'waterproof' phones. Treat a rating as a design intent, not a lifetime guarantee, and add a pouch when the stakes are real.
Choosing the right protection for the risk
Match the gear to the actual exposure. For light rain and the occasional splash, a phone's built-in water resistance plus common sense may be enough, though a simple pouch adds cheap insurance. The tissue test is non-negotiable
Never trust a new pouch with your phone until you've sealed a dry tissue inside and submerged the empty pouch for a minute. Dry tissue means a good seal. It's the cheapest insurance in photography.

Test and use a pouch correctly
A pouch is only as good as your seal, and seals fail from user error far more than from defective ratings. Before your phone ever goes in a new pouch, run the tissue test: seal a dry paper tissue inside the empty pouch, submerge it for a minute or two, and confirm the tissue comes out completely dry. If it's even slightly damp, the pouch or your closure technique is at fault — better to learn that with a tissue than with your phone. Repeat the test every few outings, because clasps wear and seals stiffen with age and cold.
In use, close the pouch exactly as designed every time — most use a fold-and-clip or a snap-lock, and a lazy closure is the classic failure. Press out excess air so the window sits flat against the screen, which improves both touch response and photo clarity, though leaving a little air helps a floating pouch ride screen-up. Keep the clear window clean and unscratched, and don't exceed the depth rating; pressure at depth can breach a seal that's perfectly fine near the surface. After every outing, especially in salt or chlorine, rinse the pouch in fresh water, turn it inside out, and let it air-dry fully before storing it out of direct sun, which degrades the plastic. If it gets wet anyway
Speed and restraint both matter when gear takes on water. Immediately power the device off and leave it off — running current through wet electronics is what causes shorts. Do not press buttons repeatedly or plug it in to 'test' it, and above all do not charge a wet device, which can drive a damaging current through corroded contacts. If it's a camera, remove the battery and the memory card right away; getting the power source out is the single most protective action you can take.
Rinse gently with clean fresh water if the device met saltwater or chlorine, because leaving salt to dry inside is worse than the initial wetting — this sounds counterintuitive, but a brief fresh rinse dilutes the corrosive residue. Then dry the exterior, open every door and port you safely can, and let the device sit in a dry, ventilated place for a long time — days, not hours. Skip the bag-of-rice folklore; rice does little and its dust can enter ports. If you want a desiccant, use proper silica gel packets in a sealed container.
Manage expectations honestly: prevention works, recovery often doesn't. A device that met clean fresh water briefly and was powered down fast has a reasonable chance; one that was submerged in saltwater, or powered on while wet, frequently doesn't survive even if it flickers back to life for a while before corrosion finishes the job. For anything valuable, a professional repair service that can open and properly clean the board is the best shot. And this is the strongest argument for backing up your photos continuously — because the images are worth more than the device, and a good backup means a drowned phone costs money, not memories.
Never charge a wet device
