This is why technique beats product every time. You can own the most expensive cleaning fluid and the finest microfiber cloth on the market and still ruin a front element if you skip the first step. The entire discipline of lens cleaning is really about removing loose particles before anything touches the glass, and then applying the least aggressive method that will get the job done. Think of it as a ladder: you climb only as high as the dirt forces you to.

Understanding that changes how you approach a dirty lens. Instead of reaching straight for a cloth and rubbing, you pause, assess how dirty it actually is, and choose the gentlest tool that works. Most of the time, that means you barely touch the glass at all.

The tools worth owning

A complete lens-cleaning kit is small and cheap, and every item earns its place. Start with a rubber air blower — a squeeze bulb that pushes a jet of air across the glass to lift loose dust without contact. Avoid canned compressed air for lenses; it can spray propellant and freeze moisture onto the surface. Storage matters too. Keep gear in a bag with some padding and, in humid climates, a few silica gel packets to discourage fungus, which can etch coatings from the inside where no cloth can reach. A lens that's blown clean, capped, and stored dry will look new for a decade.

When to stop and get help

Some problems are not cleaning problems. If you see a hazy bloom that won't wipe away, tiny branching filaments, or specks that sit behind the front glass rather than on it, you may be looking at internal dust or fungus — and no amount of surface cleaning will touch it. Trying to disassemble a lens at home usually ends worse than the original issue, because the internal elements are aligned to tolerances you can't restore without proper tools.

Similarly, if the front element is already scratched, cleaning won't undo it, and aggressive polishing will only remove more coating.
